UNIVERSITY SENATE.

The New Zenland University Senate commenced its annual session to-day.-The report of the chairman, Sir Robert Stout referred to the effects of the war on the university, which had lost many of its ablest and' most heroic youths. He hoped that the record of graduates and students who- gave their lives for -. their country would be preserved. He -stated reasons for having an external examiner, saying that- the officer really performed the duties. x>f, an information bureau- for State purposes. If the central examinations, were taken from the Senate its main function, ceased. The Senate should/ ' consider whether a change should v be made m the subjects for senior scholarships, as there had been a great, falling off m the 1 . number of, students studying ike German language. ', Without raising the question of the conduct of the Germans during the war, the Senate ought ■to consider the number of students ous of ' taking this subject. ' He iirge'd the establishment of popular "Saturday lectures by professors for the benefit of the public;, also practical: lectures on public " hea^thl' and .other 1 subjects.
