DISBURSEMENT OF FUNDS.

Some informal discussion took place at yesterday's meeting of the Citizens' Defence Committee on the disbursement of the funds of the committee now that the Repatriation Board was taking the matter up. The discussion arose from a remark made by Mr. Birrell m his report of the Advisory Board's Conference.

Mr. Oman considered that the funds should be utilised to assist permanently disabled men by augmenting their pensions.

Mr. Munns said the position seemed humorous to him. ./The. Society had been hanging on to' the;^ money 'during ;th& war, Sand* now <• they < did"- not ! know what to do with it. ■'•'

Mr. Birrell- contended that Mr. Munns had brought m «a' large number .« of "mares' nests." Mr. Muniis was a member of the Claims Board;* but he had never attended the meetings, and was continually "talking ontside ; " " Mr. Munns asked the chairman to call for order, and inquired how much longer he would have to atand the insults. Mr. Gaddum asked Mr. Munns to mention any case where people had been ill-treated. Mr. Munns : I never said any people had 1 been ill-treated. I just said the committee had not been as liberal as it might have been. Mr. Bright: That is your opinion. Mr. Munns: Yes. Mr. Stock: When is the Mayoral election ? (Laughter.) Mr. Munns : More insults. Mr. Bright asked what was before the meeting. Mr. Obleman said that it had been stated that applications had been held ud m ,view of the Repatriation Board shortly taking the matter up. Mr. Broadhurst : No applications whatever have been held up. Mr. Coleman : I accept that. Mr. Lange referred to one application which hadl been held up for two months. Mr. Stock, on behalf of the executive committee, explained the reasons for the loan not being granted immediately. Mr. Fletcher : To tell you the truth. Mr. Chairman, I do not think that man himself knows what he wants. Mr. Lange said the applicants should be advised of the result of their applications, as they kept coming to him to know the result. Mr. Stock said the executive had cranted every application recommended by the Claims Board. Mr. Munns asked what about a case mentioned. . Mr. Stock : That was granted, alflionsrh on different conditions from those recommended by the Claims Board. The discussion on the matter then dropped on the ruling of the chairman.
