THREE SPRINGTIMES.

' SPRING 1915. It is. spring in God's own country, Where the starry clematis flower Twines round the boughs of the kowhai trees And makes a fairy bower. And over the bush-clad ranges Of the place they call their home, The lads who were born 'neath the Southern Cross, Tn the springtime loved to roam. SPRING 1916. In a northern clime Jt is springtime, By the blue Aegean Sea. Where the lads who came from the sunny ?=outh, Are fighting for liberty. In the cause of right and freedom, They are dying for you and me. In the flower of their early manhood, On far Gallipoli. SPRING 1917. Again it is spring, and the fluer-de-lis Is blooming, and scenting' the breeze. But the lads from the south are lying at rest, Far from the kowhai trees. No fern, nor starry clematis Twine o'er their lowly bed, In that hallowed spot in far off lands, Where rest New Zealand's dead. But whenever I see the clematis, Or the yellow kowhai bells, I pray for fhe lads who died for us In France and the Dardanelles. / — G.B.S. May, 1018.
