In addition to taking, a lively interest m public affairs m Christchurch, he had been olosely connected with and deeply interested m the British Antarctic expeditions under Scott and Shackleton, and was a great assistance m connection Avith the local arrangements for these expeditions. For several years he has been consul for Belgium m Canterbury Maryborough, Nelson, and Westland
