DEFENCE COMMITTEE.
■ ♦ The Citizens' Defence Committee/ met yesterday afternoon. Present : Messrs. G. &toclc (m the chair), J. B. Broadhurst,. H. De Costa, J. B. Oman, R. M. Birrell, A. H. Lange, W. Pitt, G. Wildish, W. J. Sinclair, G. C. Munns, C. A. Fenwick, F. C. Gaddum, H. White, J. W. Bright, Fletcher, H. Miller, J. S. Wauchop, Howai v d_Kenway, W. Webb, and W. lies. Captain. Pitt, lion. Secretary to the Tairawbiti Club, forwarded" a statement of receipts and expenditure, together with a cheque for the sum of £72 14s 7d, being, the net result of the entertainment organised to .raise money m aid of tho Gisborne Citizens' Defence Committee's funds. Ihe money was raised for the general fund, and may be used hi any direction the committee deemed advisable. The club committee regrets that the result -was not larger, but can only point Out that such a poor result was no doubt caused' through, the members of the Citizen*' Committee' not giving that assistance which they had a right to expect when an entertainment was organised to assist the f tind. The statement .showed gross receipta^£B9 6s 7d ; expenditure £16 12sl, Tjalance £72 14s 7d. Expenses' incurred by the club, but not charged against the- receipts, amounted to £33 Os 9d> inojuding cost'ot material, carting, train" fares for" performers, hire of* piano, Opera House for rehearsals, etc. — It was decided tv send theni a, letter,, thanking them for the effort. Tho financial statement showed the following receipts for the fortnight oud ling October 14th: Mrs. E. Kenway, Red Cross fund, £2; Mrs. N. L. Brown fltri-monthly) general fund, £1 10s; refund allowance, £4; C. Mayston (monthly); general, fund, £2; H. Kenway, Wounded Soldiers', fund, £2; Defence warrant refund, £13 15s; Mrs. E. F*M. Burgess, Wounded Soldiers' and Sailors' fund , £2 ; net proceeds picture night; £7 7s. .'..-../.." Mr. W. Pitt asked tho society to pay a number of accounts.'" m connection with the hire of cars m connection with the funerals of two returned soldiers.. He asked "the society to pay them — not as n precedent— on tho understanding that 'n future the association should appeal to the Motor Union. — After some discussion the accounts were referred to the Claims Board, with power to act. Messrs. W. G. Sherratt and Wallis were appointed to visit the hospital, and Messrs. J. S. Wauchop and R. M. v Birrell to meet tho steamer during the ensuing period Votes of tharijis were passed to Messrq W. lies and Caulton for so consistently placing their cars at the disposal of returning soldiers. Mr. Fenwick intimated* that, he and Mr. Gaddum had visited , the hospital, and reported everything as satisfactory. The A.M. P. Society presented a proposal by the society, m which soldiers would be financially assisted m connection with their insurance, policies. — After some discussion it was decioted to write to the Soldiers' Financial Assistance Board, asking for infbrihatum iv this 'matter. ■ ■
