m .' .. > * • \ . CAMPAIGN ABRANCEMENTS. A meeting of local business men: was held at the Borough Council ' chambers this morning to meet Messrs. O. M. Luke, of Wellington I , 'Messrs.. 'A. Vaniey and F. L. King, of the YM.C.A., m order to arrange for a canvass m connection with "Our Day" campaign on behalf of the Eed Cross movement. There were present: The Mayor (Mr W. G. Sherratt), Messrs H. H. deCosta, J. B. Kells, E. Adair, G. J. Black, E. T.v "Doddrell, H. Kenway, and I. Mirfield. Mr Kenway intimated that . the ladies' organisation had been completed, and it was desired that an organisation of business men should be formed to .facilitate tne work of collection. Tolaga Bay had already raised £1200, and it was hoped this would be au^mented_to £1400.. , Mr Kells suggested that the success of the recent fighting would cause people to think there was no necessity to contribute. . . / , The Mayer expressed the opinion that there wpuld still be a great deal of fighting yet to be done 1 , and. .more money would bo required .than ever. It was agreed to appoint Mr W.i G. Sherratt chairman of committee, whilst all present were appointed to the committee with several additions, including Messrs H. Maude, -C. A. .Fenwick, G. J. W. Bright, E. P. Mountfort, and H. White. Mr E. Adair was appointed secretary. , ■ The chairman stated he had received two cheques as follows : Result of basket social and dance held, at Wainj_ftke on September 12 m aid of Red Cross special day' effort by the Waikohu, Puha, and surrounding districts, viz., -snlo of baskets £67 15s, sale of tickets £31 5s 6d, 'donations 'per list* £ls 6s, total- £ll4 6s 6d ;. expense's nil. Murray, Roberts and Co. , oddments of wool £1 2s, It was agreed that a canvass should be made, of the country districts, and also of the business firms. : It was decided that /m order to avoid overlapping the -businessmen's appeal should be cbp T . fined to the firms' donations, leaving the individual coulections to the ladies' committee. ■-.-•< It was agreed to as"k tliat subscription lists be opened, at the local., clubs. Arrangements' were made for visiting the saleyards, whilst members of tho committee were deputed to call on the-.vari-crus firms throughout the, town. ' Tt was suggested that a mock court might be conducted, and it was resolved to ask the Soldiers' Club to arrange same. Tlie: Mayor stated ' that the, sum.; of £10,000; had been fixed as the' target. CoTlecTSng^ was m progress jon the Coast, and it was .hoped that a vigorous effort would be -made. Although. "Our Day" is being held on - 'Saturday 'next, the campaign would net close until the end of the month. '
