As a result all the rivers are running high, and the Wai- | makariri has overflowed m several places. J The main north road is impassable to , vehicular traffic, and m the neighbori hood of Belfast many farms are under j water. Crops have been damaged and ■ slight losses of stock have ibaken place. j An exceptionally strong south-west gale has been blowing all day with occasional showors of hail and sleet. ' I MASTERTON, last night. A heavy fall of snow occurred at Masterton antl m the "surrounding country ithis afternoon, and a considerable mortality among lambs is feared. WELLINGTON, last night. There was a heavy downpour of rain last night, and further driving rains to-day, accompanied by hail. During last night's fall residents close to the Terrace Gardens were startled by a loud crash, Investigation showed that a concrete retaining wall at the back of a house collapsed, bursting m the back door and pushing m. the walls of thf> house. A smalt child narrowly escaped death.
