GAMBLING METHODS.

DENOUNCED BY MINISTER.

/Special to the Herald.) ,-.,..- CHRISTCHURCH, this day. At a meeting of the ■ Council of Churches a resolution was passed, protesting- against' the) introduction of gambling methods m raising funds for patriotic purposes. -Special reference was made m the discussion to the organisation which -is running the Trentham scholarship fund. The Rev. Mr. Walker said the scheme for the Trentham scholarship fund was the biggest gamble ever placed before the New Zealand public. Ait first £10,000 was the end aimed at, but the Prime Minister got m touch with an energetic organiser whp suggested that if £10,000 was given m prizes they stood a good chance of raisr ing £25,000. The chairman (the Rev. J. J. North) said the setting up of scholarships for soldiers' children was a schemo that should bo first pronounced on by responsible educational authorities. He did not think the forming of a separate caste, so to speak, of soldiers' children was a desirable thing to do. Dr. Ewing thought it useless to approach a Government already deeply committed " to gambling, as proved :by its npholdinjj of the totalisator. The council should reserve action for a comprehensive, well-thought-out attack on gambling. ' ,
