PALMERSTON N., this day. A special meeting of the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce this morning decided ? m view of tho probable serious curtailment of coastal shipping between Wellington, Foxton, and other North Island and West Coast ports, owing to risks of floating enemy mines, that additional trawlers should be provided to sweep the minefields; that, m order to allow trad© of the ports 'affected to be carried on, the Government should arrange an insurance against war risk. FOXTON, this day. The local State school and contents wero totally destroyed by fire about one o'clock this morning. The building accommodated 400 children, and was well appointed. Its opening wa_ one of the last publip functions attended by tiro late Mr. Seddon. The origin of the fire ig a mystery, but incendiarism it suspected. GREYMOUTH, last night. Mr. James Warnes, a pioneer of the Coast, died on Saturday. Deceased had been ailing for two years. He was 80 years of age and is the father of Mr. B. C. Warnes, of Base Records, Wellington.
