At the ladies' hockey tournament Canterbury defeated Mauawatu m a closely contested- game by two goals to one. Poverty Bay defeated Wellington B by four goals to nil. The Poverty Bay ladies met and defeated Wellington B by four goals to nil yesterday afternoon m pouring. rain. 'Tlie Poverty Bay tetim held the advantage throughout, and their defence put the forwards on the attack most of the game. The *>lay of F. Hill was well worth .watching ; her stick work and clever passing had the Wellington backs falling over themselves m trying to beat her. She Was well supported by R. Malcolm j' -who also gave a fine exhibition. These two ladies; did the scoring for Poverty Bay, F. Hill scoring three , goals ' and R. Malcolm one. The victory of Canterbury' over Mauawatu now leaves, Poverty Bay -a; clear win to the good, and Poverty Bay meet Manawatu tliis afternoon, when a hard and fast game is expected. Tlie result will ,be awaited with interest, for should either a draw or a win go to Poverty Bay -they will again be the holdei's of the cup. Judging by their play, and the combination with which they are now playing, they should be able to hold their own this afternoon. In the event of Poverty Bay being- defeated there will be three teams left .to .play off, namely, ■ Poverty Bay, Canterbury', and. Manaw/atu. — The men 'are' now? hard at it getting into form for the ?upproadhing visit of tlie Auckland 'men's- teahi, and they are showing up well, but some of the men . will, have to take it more seriously, 'and roll up, or they will not be m .good enough form to see a hard match out.
