. •' — ' — ♦ . •- : '..' -. The social and dance ai-rahged by tho young, people of Ormond was" a great , success, . many coming from Patutahi, le Karoika, Waerenga-a-hika, and Waimata. '.The -attraction was mostly the fancy costumes, which were decidedly well got up and beautiful. About 4*o couples took part m tho dancing, ' * floor being m good order. The music .was provided by Miss Dower; and was 1 all that could: be desired*^ -Mr Walfer White was M.C., and carried out his > duties m a very,, creditable manner. .Messrs S. McLeod arid Q. Gordon were •- the joint secretaries, and worked well - and , willingly. At tho interval the * floor was.. cleared for the promenade of the^ fancy, costumes;, when nine young ;■ ladies and three young men took "part. ■>; A ballot was taken, Miss Ethel Parsons, attired as Britannia, who looked charm. D ; ingr and majestic m her costumo and ! silver helmet, gained 41 votes, and was •>i awarded first prize. Miss Harper -at ' Powder and Patches, looked 'ex- ! ceedingly nice, with a good figure; and i- was a close second. In the young men's ;• competition Mr. -E. Jones, appearing r! smart and active,, dressed as a Mexican : Cow Boy, gained 40 votes, and was '. ' awarded iirst prize. Mr. J. Davis, fas d a 'Jester, was agobd' second. /Mr. A. Parsons presented the prizes, and con* ,-: gratulated the winners on their success. , : He said the young men had done ; exceedingly well, and deseirved the great--I', est credit for the manner m which they '..had all; worked together to raise vfunds for our brave boys at the front. . -He . was also requested by the .young jnen ■ ' to tender their- sincere thanks to the young ladies' committee for the assist- , ance that they had given that evening. The young men then . handed over the sum of £9, the takings at the door, tc the young ladies to be used by them , to send Christmas comforts to our hoys ' at the front. (Cheers). It may bo menr tioned that the young ladies have been " working bard for some time,. and a large c number of parcels are now ready to be sent away.'
