HEAVY LOSSES FEARED

CHRISTCHURCH.. .Iast night. ' Fortunately. for Christchu^ > ( p,h (^an.d the district generally, the fear of frost last 1 ! night was not 'reas!ise*d, and there are;! now reasonable! prospects of the city boc'oming clear 'of snow in two^or throe days. A thaw set in during the night, and thero has been a. good deal of rain to-day. Reports from the eouiui-y districts regarding .tlio labe.st situation are .-nore reassuring. s ' IMio footba-11 match Otago High School, v. Christ's College hpd to be a'iandoned. The College boys, assisted by, the City Council scoops, made a valiant attempt to clear the snow off the ground, but the task was soon fountd. to he all impossible one.. - .-• . .; . . - -. ;...*' " '■ Most of .the city -schools have, had' to be closed. _ / : - Tho Lake Coleridge electric Junos have held without interruption .tnroughout thie stoi-m. This is probably due to the fact that the snow up colintry has ' npt been so .hea-vy as it was a foi't night ago. • Advice from Kaikoura states ..tliat snow fell heavily over the whole , country last night. This, on top of the previous heavy fall in the early part-' of the month, will probably resu.'t in serious conpequencejs to a number of paatoralists. .lohnston's whaling party saffered ,a heavy loss. Their smaller but faster oil launch broke away. 'from its moorings and became a total wreck.
(Special to the Herald.l
CHRISTCHURCH,. this day, . The full force of the storm seems to have been directed at the East Coast areas, although the back hills were lightly visited. • Generally speaking, the fall of snow has now .ceased, although Arthur's Pass is proving the exception. A feature of the snow On this .occasion" is that the high ! winds have cajuseil it to, pile- into drifts. Where caught" bv these, stock, ill-prepared . lor further rigors, are faring badly.! Thus -at Methven, wheres the snow averaged seven inches, it collected in many of the. paddocks from f/ivp to six ieet deep. The portions exposed ', to the wind were swept absolutely clear. The. intense cold of .the wind-exposed areas in many 'ca'ses is proving serious, sheep perisli!ing from this cause. Cheviot on, tins' occasion has. had its fair share of the visitation, and -traffic by road to Kaikmfra is ' bloctked north of Parnassus." The storm played > freely arpuncl Wa'au 'districts, several , inches covering the flats, whilst the hills again suffered^ Lack of telephonic communication in these arejis prevents any' esiimate as yet bejing. arrived njti as to -the done. *" ■',''"'
