LAND FOR SOLDIERS.
The Land" Board was engaged this morning m examining soldier applicants for land. The ballot was m the favor of 7/1526, Alfred Ernest Stevens, New Zealand Mounted Rifles (two years' and 132 days' service abroad), station hand, Gisborne, seotion 2, block 2, Whangaj-a, 395 acres 3 roods, O.R.p. Aalf-year's rent, £84 ss.
There were twenty-six applicants, of whom X 6 wer© admitted to the ballot.
After the ballot the unsuccessful candates held a meeting, at which they expressed satisfaction with the manner m which the ballot was conducted, but passed a resolution urging on the Government the neoessity of opening up further blocks for selection by returned soldiers.
A committee was set up comprisine Messrs. W. Fox, J. A. Mullooly, J. Graham, and T. Kane, to gather information to place before the applicants so that they can make joint representation to the members.
