THE TRENCHING BATTALION.
AN EXPLANATION.

WELLINGTON, this day. On June 28th, a. question was cabled Home m regard to a report stating that 233 men of the New Zealand Entrenching Battalion had been captuTed. "Nothing," stated the question, "is known Here about an entrenching battalion formation." The following replyhas now been received by the Defenco Minister: "All the New Zealand reinforcements m France were last February, on the absorption of the Fourth' Brigade, organised into three entrenching battalions, and arc, now so organs ised, but when the surplus numbers are absorbed . they wilt form an en-,, trenching battalion wit'li a strength of 22 officers and 1130 "jpher ranks. Th«?y were moved hurriedly by motor-buses from Abeele to.St, \fan> Capel to fill n P..fi; ,gap dear M^Wen^ and attached" tjto^ths lath PiViaipn^ They rendered excellent service, and fought well, but some were captured through being cut off. The casualties total 251."
