Poincare, m a Bastille day message to the American foi'ces, says : "For four years the gallant British" French, and Belgian armies have been fighting upon the wasted soil of France and Belgium for right and freedom. The splendid American now- comes to assume a great part m the gigantic straggle. We have tlui same aims, the same resolution to pursue the war with our best strength until a common victory frees the world from German domination. United and determined, we will attain bur end and soon celebrate together the deliverance of the nations and reparation for their violated rights." General Joffre's message states : "We all feel the approach of the moment when the defeat of Germany will allow all free nations to celebrate the independence of the world."
Tt is significant that both messages contain phrases indicating that an enrly victory is expected.
