BLACK ORPINGTONS TOP THE SCORE. - The final result of the Burnley egg laying test is to hand, the total being 535 eggs for 365 days. Those identical figures are also reported for a single hen at Gatton. It is singular that both the Queensland bird *nd the Victorian bird) finished with the same total of 335 Both birds are Black Orpingtons, and this now stands as the world's record ! for ouaJAd's laying for the year. TSiey are woiSwful records, and: go to show the advancement that careful selection j has made m. poultry breeding. In the' case of the Gatton bird, the eggs did not como up to standard weight, which is 2oz. each. The average weight Mas lfoz. In Hawkesbury another line, record of 312 was put up by a Black Orpington. Though not so high m numbers, she actually produced much greater, weight of eggs m the year. The Hawfceabury bird laid 1 312., eggs, weighing 411 b, m the year^ while the Gatton bird produced 335 eggs, weighing 36£lb. The greatest sequence of laying was 86 eggs m 86 days, produced* by the Gatton j bird. This is remarkable, and goes to show how near the 365-eggs-a-year-bird i$ being approached.
