COST OF THE ADDITIONAL ALLOWANCES.

WELLINGTON, this day. The Minister of Defence states that the new scale of allowances to soldiers' children will cost £103,941 per annum. Tho Cabinet decided that the additional sixpence per day to be given to children should not be considered by the Financial Assistance Board when making advances. Additional grants for widowed mothers of soldiers now serving will amount to £17,062, making, with the present allowances, £30.712 per annum. This sum is likely to be largely increased owinjr to .mother* becoming eligible, but by how much it is impossible to estimate.
