SEDITION IN FIJI.
PUNISHMENT OF OFFENDERS.

AUCKLAND, this day. Imprisonment for terms ranging from one to 18 months ,*haye been passed on 15 or 16 Fijian Tiativeß 'arrested on charges of seditious utterances. For some time past there has been, apparent a slight spirit of unrest amongst natives, particularly those of the hill districts^ The principal offender, Sailosi, about sixty years of age, circulated statements to< the effefct that the King of England had abdicated and had been succeeded! .by the Kaiser; that the present loyal leaders representing Britain had been deposed, and that no more taxes ;were, to be imposed. According 'to Sailost a new religion known as "Number 8" was to be established, this title being derived from the fact that it followed the Seventh Day Adventists' doctrine?. The main feature of the new religion was Saturday and Sunday days of rest. The disaffection aroused! appears to have ceased 1 .
