WAIKOHU COUNTY COUNCIL.
The adjourned monthly meeting of the Waikohu County Council was held' today, there beiiig present: — Crs. L, B. Tulloch (chairman), R. D. Dymock, E. J. Williams, J. 8.. Clark, C. H. Bridge, and C. Gahkrddger. Mr. J. B. Broadhurst, hon. secretary of -the Gisborne. -Defence Committee, wrote advising that the Council's representatives: had been 'duly elected and that tHe next meeting of the committee would be held on April 16th. A copy of the balance-sheet for the year ending December 31st, 1917, was enclosed. — Received^ The Hon. the Minister of Finance wrote asking that the Council brga'riise! an appeal for subscriptions to the new War Loan. ; — Received. Mr. John* Pearce wrote asking to be allowed to rent a small bridge reserve near the Kanakanaia bridge. — Agreed to r<yit the reserve at 5s per annum. Mr. W. B. Harding wrote asking whether anything definite bad been done m regard to the erection. of Ihe Koranga stream •'bridge. — Decided to. reply, t.-iat no
answer had yet been .received from the public. Works Department .as to the use y*of red birch 'timber. * Mr. W. H. Williams wrote m refer-
enoe to the appointment of a surface-man-.on his road.T-^The clerk was instruct*ed ±o inform Mr. Williams that matters connected with the surfacemen were left entirely to the overseer. Mr. J. W. Price applied to have repairs carried out on thfe -Makaj-et-u' road. — Overseer to attend to. Mr S. •&. Mr. E; W. Bousfield drew* attention to the need for repairs , to v some of the stock paddocks controlled by, the Council. — Decidted to . draw up a list of stock paddocks m the County and authorise the overseer to have them kept m proper order. Mr. H. E. Burgess wrote suggesting a fresh agreement for the working of his gravel pit at Te Karaka. — Decided to Offer Mr. Burgess a lump sum per annum for use of tjle pit. . ; •'.-*' Tlie clerk of the Te Karaka Town
Board' wrote proposing that the cost of maintaining -the drains and* watertablesJroui Evinson's corner to the river should be divided equally between the Board &id the Council; the Board also offered to '.bear/Jiall the cost. Of maintaining the drains from the overhead bridge to E^rinson's corner if the Council would contribute half the cost of maintaining the , .drains from the Council chambers to Stevenson's corner (via Station road). —The Council would accept the oversight pf the drains and watertables and would maintain -thesa as required for traffic; The second proposal *was declin ed . . The clerk of the Mangapapa Town Board wrote suggesting that a confer-, cn.ce of the* committee of magtiagement be held at an early date to discuss the maintenance of the I^ospital road. — Received. . . . , , , , Mr. B. Dobba applied for the right to cut firewood from timber on 'Neill road. —Left to Cr. Clark to -arrange for royalty. - Tlie Te Karaka Town Board suggested the Council making a levy of Is per load on gravel carted during the winter months from the Te, Karaka pit, on condition half the amount of the levy >>c spent upon that portion of the road controlled by the Town Board.-— After some discussion it was resolvedto inform f'-'-- Board that the Council preferred to ke the traffic conform to the heavy flic by-laws, which it was decided to strictly enforce.' _ Mr. D.
