KAKANUI MURDER.

WELLINGTON, last night. The Minister for Justice states that every effort will be made to: find the man suspected' of the murder at Gemmell's Crossing, Oamaru. The police authorities- aro confident that if ..the fugitive is alive he will be found. There are many deep pools m the - rugged country under search,; .and .lone theory is that the man disappeared into one of these holes. - ; .;

Many persons are commenting on the, fact that although the Government- offered an immediate reward of £500 for the capture of the Runanga murderer, no reward has been offered as a stimulus m the present search. fo*r ■' the -suspected Kakanui murderer. The cases, however, are not parallel, for m the first instance there was the loss of, a huge sum oi) money, land the police did not even have anyone under suspicion, while m the second instance the matter is confined to a simple search. . Th© suggestion has been made that Mayhew niay have adopted a feminine disguise, and the police are keeping -this possibility m. their minds. Rumors as to Mayhew 's whereabouts are increasing •m number, and ifc i's certain the. promise .of- a- reward would, lead to an increase m ;tlie .minors. Tlie authorities have been. -a long time m considering the allocation of tho reward of £500 m connection with the arrest of Eggers, the Runanga murderer, andi the division i.s awaited with particular interest m the police force.
