CONVICTS ATTEMPT ESCAPE. WARDER BOUND AND GAGGED. The most sensational attempt at; gaolbreaking m the history of "Victoria was made at Pentridge prison, on the morning of' March, 23, by two men, Townley and Gilmdurp who are serving long sentences, and,.<wh(> have exceedingly bad careers m crime: They sawed their way out of the hospital ward m the early hours, • and when the warder m charge of their section passed their door they pounced upon him and bound, and gagged him. Having secured the warder, ., they took his revolver and watch and chain from ' him, . and, after wrenching! a strong lock off a door leading to the hospital gardens, scaled the roof of the officers quarters. The "bound and . gagged warder rolled himself down $he steps to the telephone* arid, operating the instrument with his head, called for help. Both; prisoners were captured inside the prison walls after shots had been fired. ' Gilmour is a New Zealander.
