A HEROIC CAPTAIN.
The King has decorated a Leith shipmaster m recognition of his' courage m an encounter with a .submarine cruiser. The latter's torpedo missed, after which brisk shell-fire began at tiwo miles range. The submarine carried two 6in guns and the steamer one gun. The latter's smokeboxes ignited at'a critical stage, and the submarine^ believing that its sheila had been effective, made full speed on the boat. < A big fight ensued, and the merchantman put out of action the submarine's after-gun. The steamer suffered damage to a mast, but no one was injured until the fight had lasted an hour, when a shell penetrated three bulkheads on the main deck, and buried itself im a spare bunker. It did not explode, but the splinters broke the legs of a passenger. Half an hour later the submarine retired. It remained on the surface. Probably it was unable to submerge.
