FURIOUS FIGHTING.
Within seven miles oi? amiens. ALLIES' GREAT EFFORTS. (United Service.) - LONDON; April 5. Mr. Keith Murdoch writes: — A formidable resumption of the battle has brought furious fighting within seven miles of Amiens. Tho pre-arranged organisation by means of which the Germans evolved order out of the battlefield and brought up the masses of guns so speedily, gives striking proof that the»Huns are making a strong and confident bid for absolute victory. . The battlefield extends for many miles on each side of the line on a frontage of 50 miles, and everybody is digging when not wiring, holding trenches or piling munitions on dumps. Little is visible m the actual area of fighting except brown earthworks, new gleaming w.ire, and black shellbursts. '••''' The lines scorn sleepy by day, but at night there is furious activity everywhere. The . Germans have concentrated Gofhas- and other aeroplanes, and have apparently abandoned attacks on defenceless cities m order to produce a maximum effort on the front. Despite repeated heavy aerial attacks on the Amiens railways, the main ParisAmiens railway continues almost normal* running, while trains along the whole strategic railway system on the French front defy the constant efforts of the enemy airmen. It is sheer folly to imagine that the Allies, . easily or even certainly hold the Germans. Amongst the most immediate and pressing needs are new crews for the, guns. The Allies are getting every possible soldior into the combatant ranks and are drawing all trained men from America.
