ENEMY THRUST AT FRANCO-BRITISH JUNCTION.
THE SLIGHT GAIN AT HAMEL. GERMANS USING BRITISH AMMUNITION. (Reuter's Telegram.) (Received April. 6, 2.45 p.m.) LONDON, April Not, LONDON, April 5 (4.40 p.m.) The enemy is again thrusting at what he believes is the junction of the FrancoBritish troops, in the hope of yet separating them. His assaults against the British yesterday, apparently aimed at a converging movement on the little town of 1 Cordie, was delivered in' dense waves, which machine gun and rifle fire heavily punished. •- , ■ He succeeded in straightening out a little salient in pur line in the neighborhood of Hamel Wood and village. OH.'r counter-attack was not sufficiently strong to restore the position. The weather was wet and misty and it was impossible for the airmen" to cooperate. Fragments of projectiles with which the enemy is shelling our back areas bear British marks, showing that the guns and ammunition came from the Russian front.
