Mr. Percival Phillips writes : The Now Zealanders on Sunday night gained one of the most important locaV victories since the present lull began, which was carried out with lightning speed. They captured m seven minutes the Hebnterne-Auchonvillers road, which the Germans strongly held, depriving the enemy of necessary observation. There elements belonging to four divisions were jammed into a confused mass.' The New Zealanders found 110 -machine guns among the debris, and m addition, took nearly 300 prisoners, including three officei's. FJUROPEiAN* COMMENTS. LONDON, March 25. The French* comments agree with those of the Btaglish. , ! Major Civrieux (Le Matin) expected a -tactical retreat. He remarks that it is a frequent incident m a prolonged defensive battle which may eventuate m real ' victory. The Homme Libre, M. Clemenceau's paper, says': "German militarism is rushing towards its ultimate defeat and butchery. AH it offers xis is an enslaved people. " ■ Amsterdam reports state that the Gcr man -c ommuniques are magniloquent. The war correspondents' telegrams are evoking extraordinary popular demonstrations, m which are blending hysterical joy apd misgiving conceiving the slaughter and tense . expectancy. Vorwarts- is the only .candid doubter. It refers to the German cause as, trembling in --the balance, and to the hundreds 6°f thousands who are bleeding.
