Speaking! to a juvenile audience at the Grafton Galleries, Dr. A. P. Thurston, of the Royal Flying Corps,' gave some graphic word-pictures of flights m the clouds. "Flying m a thunder-cloud," lie said, "one sees the sparks on. the wings of the machine, and one really becomes part of the lightning. I know where the rainbow ends; it ends on the top of every oloud. It become smaller and smaller as you approach it, until lit becomes m ball of fire. Then you run into a clammy, cold mist, which forms the cloud, and you are 'where the rainbow ends.' One gets accustomed to the noise of the engines, but never to the rush of air. On one occasion I wished to speak to my pilot, and tinder such circumstances it is usual to kick him. As 1 could not reach him, I tried to poke him with my stick, and held it out straight, but the wind actually bent tke pomt of the stick away. Wind! Why, \i flaps your ears, closes your mouth, bends your nose, and even pushes back the movable top of your bead !" Our machines, the lectui'er added, had such names as Hippo, Baby,-and Camel, —the latter because they gave the Huns "the hump."
"At present there are evidences oi great extravagance on the part of the people of the country," stated Mr. Harold Beauchamp at a meeting at Wellington to help on the Liberty Loan, "a huge expenditure is going on upon pleasure and amusements,- eating and drinking, dress, etc., etc. The nationyl bill m this respect could be curtailed by many hundreds of thousands a year, not only without hardship, but with, I think, positive benefit to the people.
