APPOINTMENT 0«F GENERAL FOCH (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) " LONDON, March. 30. The Daily Chronicle states that General Foch has been appointed, generalissimo on .. the . West front jn ' conformity with Sir Douglas Haig's and. General Petain's -wishes. . The Chronicle adds: "General Foch 's appointment is no reflection on Sir Douglas Haig .or General Petain, but the inevitable outcome of the, military situation, and has emanated from;' the soldiers themselcves. Unity of command is a. vital necessity. The -Allies have suffered sadly from lack of coordination. General Foch's claims to the position are indisputable." The Daily News protests that the appointment is full of dangers and that friction will be set up the first time the Generalissimo's orders are not approved.; It adds: "An army can stand defeat under its own chiefs, but not under a foreign general." ;-, .
