Tlu> n.\ i.'iit heavy sons have driven ashore towards tlit- Waikanae beach a vast niiantity of sand accumulated at the river enti -an. ,t, in a direction almost magnetic', nc.rlti. An improvement of roughly two feet in the soundings has been obtained. Following was the result of yesterday's play by the Gisbonie teams at the Napier bowling tournament : Smith (U isborne),. 3 wins; Barry (Kahutia), 1 win, 2 losses ; Seymour (G'.s.), I—21 — 2 ; Hird (K.). I—3: Barry (K.), I—2; Martin (K.), o—3. Mr. C. D. Arlidge, accompanied by Mrs. Arlidge, leaves for south by tho Arahura to-morrow morning. Mr. Arlidge is taking up an appointment at Hawera. Their departure will be regretted by many G-sborne friends, who will extend hearty good wishes to them in their new sphere. Mr. Arlidge has been a great helper in church work and in connection with the Church of England Men's Society? A special meeting of tho Gisborne Returned Soldiers' Association was held this, afternoon to : meet . Messrs. W. O. Long, and H. Feilding, representing the 1 Y.M.Q.A, committee, to discuss matters | in connection with the forthcoming cam- | paign. Mr. Bedford was elected to the chair, and explained that the purpose •of the meeting was fo discuss in what way they coiud assist in the Red Triangle Day campaign. Mr. W. O. Long said that it was three years .since a public appeal was made in this district. A period from March 9 to 19 had been set aside to "hold the campaign. Mr. Yarney (national seoretary for New Zealand) and the Hawke's Bay secretary (Mr. If. King) would arrive on the. '9th, aiid would assist in the supervision of the appeal. On the motion of Mr. H. R. Simeon, second'ed by Mr. P. Muldoqh, it was = decided to assist the campaign in every way. • ' According to Mr W. E. Goffe, who has just returned from the Wairoa district, ?the boat that was recently washed ashore on the Tuhara beach, near Wairoa, was .in no way connected with the ill-fated sailing vessel the wreckage of which was recently cast up at different points along the East Coast. Mr Goffe states that after a personal examination he was satisfied it was a/ local launch, probably washed' down the Wairoa river, that had been found and taken for the captain's gig of the wrecked vessel. Singularly enough a lifebuoy belonging to the lost vessel, was washed up at the same spot, and not in the boat as he had personally ascertained. The lifebuoy bears tbe name "Bertha Dolbeer," with the initials SF (San Francisco) at the bottom, the American flag being paipted on ono side and the "house" flag on the other. The latter bears the letter "W" inside a blue diamond on a black background. Further wreckage has been cast ashore at Mohaka, including a piece bf decking 22 inches square; with a large mast hole, also a piece of must burnt in a similar manner to that . which came ashore on the Kaiti beach. A very interesting scale map of the. British battlefront is being shown in?- one of Messrs. C. Rosie and Co.'s windows, on which all the villages mentioned in recent despatches are clearly marked, thr> position of the New Zealand boys being indicated by a white flag.* • / j
