DISCUSSED BY DEFENCE COMMITTEE. At yesterday's meeting of the Citizens' Defence Committee Mrs T. Preston, on behalf of, the Manutuke Women's National forwarded. £400, and. asked that it be ear-marked for the assistance of Manutuke boys on their return from the war. — The Chairman did not favor the acknowledgement of such contributions I.—-Mr1 .— -Mr Munns supported the proposal, and moved that it be accepted by the committee. — Mr Birrell seconded, because h© considered it a similar Tequest to that of the Matavrai people, which w;»s* accepted.-^Mr Stock , pointed out t li;vt> under conditions icontained in the letter it meant that the. Defence Committee would really b© the bankers of tl'o Manutuke Reserve, and they had full power to operate on the account. — •Mr Oman did not agree with the motion. --■Mr Stock moved as an amendment that t!ie> donation be received, but the claims of men .must be referred to the Claims Committee first. — Mr Keuway and Mr Ball favored the amendment.— Mr Manns pni*d that in most instances the Manutukp people (would be in a better position to judge the financial position of fhe soldiers of their district than the Claims Board itseW. — iMr Wallis said the matter yo «olved itfself into n question as to which pa-rty -was better able to judfire the financial position of the man. — Mr Konway held , that, if the Manutuke pebplo were empowered to control the money it would . open 1 up a track filled with serious possibilities. — On being put to tho meeting the amendment was carried.'
