The entire audience was filled with inextinguishable delight by the irresistibly ludicrous tantrums of 'Grumpy.' 7 Again and again during the intoxicating evening Mr. Maude was, recalled by long hand-clapping of' rare fire and persistence, and when he appeared the loud murmurs 'from decorous stalls and circle almost swelled into a', cheer,-" while -'the gallery echoed with- frank and clamorous shouts of joy. Every now and again the brilliant actor caught .the house with a rare touch of pathos/ and directly Mr. Maude was sure that the . soft pedal was m fine working order, but came some rasping absurdity to smash up the scene and the house."
