THE RAIDERS IN FIJI.

ANOTHER LITTLE STORY

SUVA (Fiji), October. 3l. There comes to hand another little story concerning the capture of the Germans, headed! by Count von Lucknor, m Fiji-

Ho was a Rotu man, was Piufou, and a member of ,the British Empire, when the » raiders landed at Waikaya Island. Piufou is a; simple-looking, guileless native, andi about the last m the world to have a second' thought about anything, so one; would' think ; but Piufou was not quite so simple as he looked. When the „ Germans came they told him, m English, that they were castaway English sailors, whose vessel had been wrecked. '. The Germans were careful enough to realise that even away out here m the mid-Pacific the native might know there was a war on and Germans were his enemies. Piufou spoke excellent : English, although the Germans did! : not know this, for ho answered!, m. broken English, and agreed to all they said, and listened — very carefully, for Piufou also spoke German, or, at least, h& hadl a good knowledge of it. There used to be many German traders m the Islands once. Now, although Pinfou, the Rotu man, spoke excellent English and middling German, he only spoke to the Germans m broken English. He entertained the. Germans, and made their stay a happy one for the few days they were there. He helped, too, to quieten their fears, m broken English, when they saw a cutter beating out to Avind'ward 1 . This was the cutter, with Macpherson, the half-caste, m it, which brought the news to Levtika, resulting eventually ; n the capture of the Huns. It wdas Piufou who told the Huns it was the -usual .cutter which went to Mokogai, the leper station about there.

It is to be. hoped that some day von Lticknor will read- this, and learn haw p infou. the Rotu man, with the guileless /ace, was instrumental m sending 1 them to a place where they can cool their heels. ,
