ARCTIC DEER.
STEAMER RAN INTO BIG HERD. DAWSON, Y. T., Sept. 19. Surrounded on- all sides 'by ' stfiinming ' caribou or , Arctic deer, the steamer Alaska' arrived m Dawson to-day, after an eventful trip up the Yukon. .The'bi ff herd of swimming caribou was enbouktered about a mile from Eagle Cit/y on the way fi>om Fairbanks and furnished j great sport for "the creiv, whioh lassoed a number and drew thean aboard, making a "beefless" day aboard the vessel one of no cohcteth when the juicy; steaks of the caribou were served.
The caribou were crossing tho river m a great herd from a northerly -'to 4 south-westerly direction when encoun-, tered. Countless thousands have been across m the last ten days. One band alone numbers approximately 10,000 and is ejected to appear sTiortly at ,a point a short distance, west of ,Daw■son, between the headwaters -of Forty Mile and Sixty Mile Rivers. There will be plenty of meat m Dawson this winter.
