SALOONS CLOSE THEIR DOORS
: NEW YORK^ Oct. 2.( Unable to cope with the multiplicity of Federal and State taxes and the increased cost of all intoxicants, one thousand saloons and retail stores in' Greater New York have closed their doors,- according to estimates made today by .excise officials. Yesterday, when (th© license' fee of £300, which must be! paid m advaiice, became due, hundreds or places failed to open their doors.. ; lii smaller cities* the operation of the new State law. providing that after 1 September 30 there could only bo one saloon to every 500 inhabitants m ■Dolitical sub-divisions having less than 55,000 population will result m the closincf of aboiit 1500 f^aloons m ' the State, this month, according to Wm. McClenahan, president of the Retail Liquor Dealers' Association. If the pji-esent situation continues, Mr McOlenehan said, three thousand saloons m the State' will have to close their doors m the next six months. ■ ■
