There was a great crowd m Gladstone road this -afternoon, particularly when the "Koon Kan Jockey Club's luce" was run. This was a novel event ■m local racing. After preliminaries the .horses lined up at Townley's corner to race t» the post office. There were two false 'starts, "the .defaulters being threatened with all tho penal. ties of the txirf law. Eventually the Worses moved off. 'if not- smartly, at least ■cry: sol:dly, and a great race ensued. "•Sleight, of Hand" (J. Jennings), won m fa«?t time, beating "Desert Gold" (11. Smith), by a "wliisVei 1 ." Master Strowan 'W.. Hart) was a- neck away third, "Re-At-niipa" (R. I Jttle), fourth, "Meiiry Roe" (P. Johnston),, fifth, and "Multifual" (C. Sinclair) last. A pro/test was not sustained, and the "tote" paid out on "No. 2." The "pay out" consisted of Is surprise packet ticket. The horses were all evenly "backed," and the tote handled &L 7 10s. -whilst "Bookie" Cope raked m the odds to the tune of over €10, so that, the "race* 1 resulted m about £30 beira? added to the fund.
The City Band wei'e m attendance, and played an enjoyable programme of music on tho "eours'e."
At 3.30 it was estimated that between 16.000 and 17,000 -surprise packets had Yen distributed, and it yran expected the whole number would be, disposed of by '■bis evening.
