CHEERFUL REVIEW OF THE SITUATION.
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association) LONDON, August 30. General Maurice, interviewed, said there were no fresh developments on the British front. The process of wearing down the ei?emy was continuous. Bombardments and infantry actions were proceeding with greater success than was generally imagined. The Germans engaged m the battle around Ypres since July 31 had twice as many divisions as the British and had withdrawn from the fighting a shade less than twice as many. Tlie British exhaustion of the enemy's reserve is a great test of progress. : Mackensen's attack had failed owing to the Rumanians' gallant resistance and ihe Austrian withdrawal to strengthen tlie Italian front- lines.
General Maurice said he had received many letters stating that the British were getting the colonies to: 'fight- for them. This idea was current m America and' especially m Spain. This was a downright lie. »nd part of German propaganda.
At present the British troops m France were six to one compared with the overseas forces. The. casualties throughout the war Avere exactly on the snrae figures, while the casualties at Ypres since July 21, were almost exactly nine to one. ' I
