A cable received from Loudon reads as follows: — "Minister for Shipping, Sir Jos. Maclay, warns those arranging to charter. British vessels after the Mar that he is unable to give assurance that national requirements Avill permit of. this being done." The faots that during the past five year's the- imports of salt into' the Dominion have ranged from 19,000 to 24,000 tons, of an indent value of £3 per ton, and that solar salt works at Geelong. Victoria, have been m operation for some time, and are reported to be a very profitable concern, have led to a proposal having, been made by Mr.' Leslie H. Macarthur, F.G.S., for the establishment of marine electro-solar salt works m New Zealand. Six sites have been examined: Kaipara harbor, inner harbor, Napier, Porirua Bay, Blenheim, Kaiapoi, and at the estuary, near New Brighton, Ch ri. -church. Each site possesses the necessary factors for the economic and expeditious manufacture of salt from sea->water, and the final selection will bo determined according to the practical and financial support accorded m the different locaditiesi
