A cable received from Loudon reads as follows: — "Minister for Shipping, Sir Jos. Maclay, warns those arranging to charter. The faots that during the past five year's the- imports of salt into' the Dominion have ranged from 19,000 to 24,000 tons, of an indent value of £3 per ton, and that solar salt works at Geelong. Victoria, have been m operation for some time, and are reported to be a very profitable concern, have led to a proposal having, been made by Mr.' Leslie H. Macarthur, F.G.S., for the establishment of marine electro-solar salt works m New Zealand. Six sites have been examined: Kaipara harbor, inner harbor, Napier, Porirua Bay, Blenheim, Kaiapoi, and at the estuary, near New Brighton, Ch ri. -church. Each site possesses the necessary factors for the economic and expeditious manufacture of salt from sea->water, and the final selection will bo determined according to the practical and financial support accorded m the different locaditiesi
