NURSERY FOR THE FLEET.
LONDQiN, July 4. A dinner, at Avhich there were 50 present, Avas held at the British Empire Club to celebrate the completion of the first year's Avork of the Commonwealth GoA*ernment\. line of steamers. The guests included Mr Wade (Agent-General for New South Wales), Sir Joseph Macclay (Shipping Controller), and several bankers and shipowners. Mr A. Fisher presided. Lord Inchcape (chairman of the P. and O. Ob.), m proposing the toast of the day, said that it Avould be a misfortune for the. enterprise of British shipping if the Government, after the war, competed Avith private owners. >, Admiral Haworth Booth (Naval AdAnser to the Australian High Commissioner) urged that big guns must not bo overlooked m the future expansion of the Australian Navy. He hoDed' that the CommoiiAvealth Line/would become the nursery for the Australian fleet. Ml* Larkin (manager of the CbmnionArealtli Line) said. that when the results of the year's work a. ere published they Avould ! highly justify Mr Hughes m. inaugurating the line. ( Fortunately the ships had escaped the submarines, and the freights liad been very good.
