Sir IV.'iJas Haig reports: The" enemy,! after tueity-four hours' intense bombardment, determinedly attacked Nieuport front on Tuesday evening. j The concent_ated : and heavy nature of the enemy's artillery fire levelled the I defences m the dune, sector near the coast. This section was isolated by the destruction of bridges across the -Y.er. Tho enemy here penetrated' our positions on a front of fourteen hundred yards lo a depth -of six hundred yards and reached the right bank of the'Yser noar the sea. The ciemy, after gaining some of our advanced positions further south, opposite Lombard zyde, was driven out by a co-.-nter-attack.'
