NEVER FRIENDS WITH THE GER MANS AGAIN.
DESTRUCTION ' , WROUGHT HAS LEFT LASTING BITTERNESS.
With the British Armies m France, March 23.
A haggard- woman at Nesle told to-day how German soldiers used to tell her neighbors that after the war the French and Germans wouldl live m friendship and England would be their common enemy. "But visit the house of the doctor," she said, pointing to a chateau, opposite, "then say whether anyone will ever again be friends with the Gei'mans." The house was" like hundreds around R.oye, Neslo and Ham. It appears the enemy fled- two 'days* 'before. The programme of destruction m considerable sized towns such, as,. these was too big a tas-k'tn be handled at short notice; But they did) much m the doctor's house. Axes were driven through the mahogany panels of both' beds; clocks and mirror? were smashed and the wainscotting was torn out. Anyhow; the doctor was fortunate. in not having his house walls blown out like many of his townsfolk. Aneer at being compelled to leave probably aacourtts for much of the destruction. The German made no secret of his increased hatred for the British. He left a notice at Nesle addressed to us, that he was "off to London."
Tliey came m singing, the Nesle woman eplained, but left m silence. That was last Sunday at mid-day.
