SUPPLYING LIQUOR TO NATIVES.
A Waii-oa nativo named Rameka Kainga waa charged at the Police Court before Mr W. A. Barton. S.M., this morning with supplying liquor to a native named Rehana Wirihana at the Park racecourse on February 3 last, such racecourse being m an area proclaimed to b» prohibited for the supply of liquor to utttiVes ft>r cblisllinpticiii oil the prenlifi&v He pleaded guilty. Constable Maloiiey said that when on duty ft*i the Pal-k racecourse oil February 3 ill the outside enclosure he saw a largo number of "natives who were partly under the influence of liquor. He could see . they -were going to the old loose-boxes m . parties. In consequence of tliis-he, took up a position, and half an hour later saw defendant and Rehana go into a loose-box. Defendant took a small bottle of whisky from his inside coat pocket and handed it to Rehana. The latter had a drink, and handed it back to defendant, who slipped it back into his coat pocket. On coming out of the loose-box they separated. Hjs Worship said he had numerous complaints m reference to the supply of iiquor to natives, who got it in' large quantities. Unfortunately . there were too many about who supplied the liquor.' There had been many convictions for this offence, a man m Wairoa being fined £30 only the other day. Notwithstanding these heavy penalties it did not appear to; act an a warning, It waa a dimetdfc offence to detect, and when a case was pxoVpd ijt necessary to inflict a sabstantial penally. Defendant was fined £20 and costs £1 Bs, m default 3 months' imprisonment. "I am to stop tK& sort of thing if I can,' adde4 his Worship. "1 Should like to have" the man who supplied you with the liquor me."
