There are twenty-one new students at the Canterbury Agricultural College this term, and there will be about forty m residence altogether. It was decided at a meeting of the Poverty Bay Stockbrokers" Association held to-day, to hold the stock sales at Miata.wh.ero yards weekly .throughout the year. The many friends of the Rev. David Shaw will regret to learn of the death of his little daughter Muriel, aged 5 years, which occurred at Te Awamutu to-day. The large establishments of London just now show a curious contrast. Only the elderly or undersized men are left, while the women who fill the gaps ,are naturally the most stalwart of their, sex. The uncanny result is that — at the stations, for example — one gets the impression of a race of male pigmies and female Amazons. It requires 1 , a staKLaffprt to remind oneself that the difjpßjtt man is really m no danger. To L morT>>w special services will be held m the Salvation Citadel, when Adjutant and Mrs Sansom, the popular officers of the Salvation Army, will be farewelling all day. On Monday evening the monster tea and musical evening takes place. Tea will be on the table at 6 p.m., aaid the usual programme will be commenced afc 8 p.m. Mr John • Townley has kindly consented to preside. Representative , addresses will also be given, and the following programme : Band selections ; dulcima solo, Mr McMurray; monologue, Mr 11. Howell ; recitation; Mr Neilson; solo,! A meeting was held m London recent- : ly of a committee appointed m May by British newspaper proprietors to consider the question of the cost of paper and production of newspapers. The com_ ' mittee came to the conclusioYi that considering the serious position of the paper market, the enormous additional cost of production, which was likely further to increase, and m order to save valuable copyright and newspaper properties, the general body of British newspaper proprietors bei recommended, to add a halfpenny to the selling price of all halfpenny and penny daily papers it being impossible under present conditions to continue publication^ except under heavy loss. The Otago Military Service Board dealt with 39 cases at Dunedin on Monday. Fourteen of the appeals were adjourned, thirteen were dismissed, m five cases time was allowed, m four conditional exemption was granted for an indefinite period, and three appeals were allowed. Special public interest was taken m the cases of Ernest William Wheeler, shipping superintendent for the Union Steam Ship Company, and of the Rev. A. CL C. .Button, , of Balf our, for whom Bishop Nevill appealed. In Mr. Wheeler's case a further' adjournment was granted without comment, at the request of Captain Free. In, the other case the Board gathered from the Bishop that he intended to appeal, in the case of every clergyman m his diocese who might be- called 'up, and it was therefore decided to adjourn Mr. Button's case till next? sitting, so that th© whole position j might be coßsid«?ed and dealt with m its wider a?pc< t*
