FIGHTING FOR THEIB HOMES.
Mr Henry Wood, the corespondent of the United Press of . America, with the French armies on the Sommo, writes : "In .the offensive on the- 'Sbmme France has again demonstrated the psychological fact noticed m, many past wars that soldiers fighting for tho immediate possession of their homes and of their hearthstones display a valor and a bravery seldom if ever equalled under other | circumstances. Ag a consequence of this fundamental principle of human nature that lies implanted m the breast of every soldier, the Ist Corps of the French army has just established for itself a six weeks' record m the Somme offensive practically without a parallel m the military l annals of France. The Ist French Army Corps, com, manded by eneral Guillaumont, is composed of' regiments from the noi'th-west-ern part of France that is now oocupied by the enemy. Some of these regiments came from Lille, Arpaa, Roubaix, and other ' centres that have suffered the most at the hands of the Her- ' mans. Thousand^ of the men came from villages and farms just a few miles beyond the German front and. where every foot of the ground gained meant one etep nearer their homes, their hearth-, stones, and possibly to loved ones. — Exchange.
