KAHUKURA, January 2. The Christmas and' New Year holidays are now at a close and despite the unfavorable -weather conditions that have prevailed the local storekeepers, and storekeepers from Port Awanui- and Manutahi all report record business. So far, in this district; we have not ex^ perienced more than a fortnight of real summer weather, and thoiigh the rains mean an abundance of feed for the rest of the season other industries, Especially the building trade, are suffering severely. ■"■•■' '•-•■■•■ The motor industry is also suffering and the writer heans that one car from Tokomaru Bay was -stuck in the Kainunga yesterday for about seven hours, eventually being got out of its precarious position by a team, of horses. 'On New Year's eve an evening was' held at the residence of the Hon A. T. Ngata, Waiomatatini. The gathering was kept up until well into .the New Year, and a most enjoyable evening was spent by all present. y Last evening a social and danCo was held in the Tiki Tiki hall, as a -farewell to Mr and Mrs F. Dale, who have been in charge of the Waiomatatini school for some yeara. The Hon A. T. Ngata, in making a presentation of a monetary order to Air and Mrs Dale,' on behalf of the residents of Waiomatatini, Kakariki, and Te Horo, - spoke bf Mr Dale's sterling qualities, and the way in which he had dealt with matters pertaining to school control, and in conclusion wished Mr and iMrs Dg.le and family all the successes of life. Mr Dale suitably responded on behalf of Mira Dale ana himself. During the evening vocal . items were . rendered by Misses F. Simmons, J. and K. Pepere, K. Hayes, R. Knox, and Messrs H! T. Fox, M. Ngata, P. Pouwhare and Max Fry. The star item of the evening waa a recitation by the Hon A. T. Ngata, a. piece of his own composition. Two hjJkas were also given during the, evening, , and as usual, met with the heartiest approval. — Correspondent.
