NEW YEAR HOLIDAYS.
As usual a general holiday will be observed m Oisborne on Monday and Tuesday next. There are indications for favorably weather Shopkeepers expect to have another busy time to-night. At Holy Trinity Church to-morrow special services of prayer for our soldiers and .sailors will be held. In the evening, many of the churches m Gisborne «im uniting m a watchnight Intercessory service, at 11 o'clock, m the Bright street Methodist Church. The service Avill be conducted by the ministers of the churches taking part. ' Suitable hymns will be sung by the combined choirs and an address will be given by the Rev. James Aitken, M.A. The public are very heartily invited to be present. A collection will be made and, after paying expenses, will be devoted to the Ked Cross Fund.
Amongst the chief outdoor attractions; on Monday will be the< Nuhaka show,! which usually attracts a large number of j patrons from this district. A successful show is anticipated. j It is expected there -will be a large gathering at the Te Karaka racecourse on Monday, -when a sports meeting will be held, the proceeds being m aid of the Waikohu Red "Cross funds. An at- 1 tractive programme has been prepared. I and patrons can rely on a pleasant day's outing. Big nominations have been received for the chopping and sawing events, and numerous contestants .should also come forward for the other events. I
Owing to the kindness of Messrs Hen- \ son and Green the Matawai Sports Club ' will hold their gathering on New Year's Day on what is known as the cricket wound, a favorite picnic resort, con- 1 veniently situated between the railway station and the "Motu river. As firstrate entries have been received for the , il'opping and sawing events visitors -can ' vf-lv on a good afternoon's sport. The H"b will provide a good luncheon at Is 6<l.
No: doubt the beaches will b» thronged' during the holidays with private picnic parties. The Camera Club hold their first nicnic and field day at Bay on Monday. Members will proceed by thfi buses and meet on the ground. On Tuesday the Catholics hold their annual pionic at Ormond.
Special trains will run on Monday as advertised m our last issue. . Bowlers will engage m a New i\ear tournament on the Oisborne green.
