Private advice has been received by Mr John Mao Lean, of Oitaio, South Canterbury, that bis brother, Lance-Cor-poral Roderick MaciLean, Cameron Highlanders, was killed hi action m France on September 24. Lanoe-Oor-poral Mac Lean was* .well-known m the Otaad district. When the war broke out he was called Home to join his regiment. Another brother, Donald MacLean, Ist Soots Guards, was killed m the retreat frohv Mons.

Private A, W. Haylock, killed, was 21 years of age. He_ was following farming pursuits up to his enlisting with the 11th Reinforcements. He was the 6on of Mr A.L. Haylock, of the Lands and Survey 'Department Head Office, Wellington, and grandson of the late C Haylock, one of the early pioneers of Canterbury, who arrived by the barque Monarch ten* months' before the "first four ships," ' iand who was the first to erect a flounnill m Canterbury— at Akaroa.

Private Cecil Louis Walker, killed, was a son of Mr Maxwell Walker, of Otumoetai, Tauranga, and a brother of Professor Maxwell Walker, of Auckland. Private Walker, prior to enlisting was employed for 13 years by Messrs Leyland and O'Brien, leaving -them to take <a position with the Aucklaaid Rimu Timber Comiany, with which' fu*ha he remained until his enlistment. He saw service m Gallipoli prior to taking the field m France. On both fronts he was employed as a bomb -thrower. While m Auckland Private Walker took a deep interest m athletics.
