He says that in order to ensure general approval on Rumania's intervention it was necessary to attack the Austrians in Transylvania instead of the Bulgarians. The general staff never entertained any foolish belief that they^ would be able to conquer,Transylvania in, a feAAT, weeks, and knew perfectly Avell that the enemy were bound to counter-attack Avith superior forces. Rumania's aim Avas to shake the Austrian- defences and deprive Hungary of her resources concentrated in the Translyvanian banats. These aims had been completely attained. The Rumanians were making an orderly and methodical retreat Avithout losing men and material, and this showed that they were fully prepared for all eventualities.
