A German communique states :—English attacks north of Thiepval led to hand-to-hand fighting. The enemy got a firm foothold at one point, but elsewhere was heavily repulsed. The French obtained a foothold at the village and sugar refinery at Genermont. We hold the southern part of Ablaincourt. There is activity west of Lutsk. Russian attacks south of Yaturcy and Bubrow were repulsed. We recaptured the summit of Smotrec, lost on tne 21st. AustroHungarians repelled the Rumanians on both sides of the Syurduk. Pass. Enemy attempts to attack east of the MonastirFlorina railway failed.
