THE RUSSIAN OPERATIONS.
SITUATION REVIEWED. I
AUSTRO-GERMAN EFFORTS TO WREST INITIATIVE FROM BRUSILOFF. (Australian and N.Z. Gable Association.) LONDON, October 15. The Observer's correspondent at Petrograd says the Austro-Germans are still energetically counter-attacking, vainly attempting to wrest from Brusiloff the initiative. The fortifications at Halicz still attract them to repel the Russian onslaught. Meanwhile the Russians have gained and retained their ground, particularly near Brzezany and Svinuky, manifesting a strong and insistent purpose m operating m important and critical directions on the southern front. Their progress, however, is necessarily slow. German absolutism has gradually hardened up the organisation from Berlin to Bagdad for a supreme struggle. The opposition to Brusiloff has trebled m vigor. Moreover, his aims must partly be determined by events on the Rumanian front. The danger to Dobruja has momentarily retarded the Russian advance m Galicia. but, when the Bulgars are thrown back, the advance will be resumed m strength. This will he opportune for the Rumanians' when facing strong enemy forces m Southern Transylvania. The operations m Galicia will henceforth be an integral part of the Allies' Balkan campaign. The Russians are, closely assisting the Allies m the most urgent task m the East aiming to defeat the Bulgarians and cut the enemy lines of communication! and especially to stop the Balkan express. The situation is that the standpoint is hopeful. Whether Lemberg is taken soon or not, the Russians are hastening the day when General Averescu .and General Sarrail will meet at Sofia.
