ARMED ROBBERS.
A DARING ATTEMPT FAILS,
HAUL FROM POST OFFICE
COUNTER.

. MELBOURNE, May 31. There was a sensational attempt at robbery this forenoon. Two postal officials named Hughes and McCartney were conveying the sum of £2000 to pay tho workmen at the new Post Office in Spencer street, when threej men armed with revolvers, rushed up in a motor rar, threw pepper in their !faces, struck McCartney severe bloAvs on the head, and attempted to grab the bag of money.
Workmen came on the scene and prevented the desperadoes' attempt, and the robbers clambered into the motor and escaped. McCartney is in hospital, hut his condition is not serious.
There was another sensation at Abbottsford. Mr Gorman, the postmaster, drew £200 from the bank to pay soldiers, and, returning to the post office, deposited the money, which was in a. hag on the counter. While he attended to the telephone a man entered and secured thei batr and bolted. He has not been caught.
